Travel Makeup Tips & Travel Beauty Essentials

Traveling with makeup can be a huge struggle. What do I bring? What if I forget something important? What if I can't fit everything? If you're a makeup lover like me, traveling brings along all these worries about makeup. Today I'm sharing some tips for traveling with makeup and then of course some of my travel beauty essentials that I absolutely cannot live without!

Invest in a quality makeup bag

I used to carry my makeup in about 3 different bags for traveling (like what?!) so I decided to invest in one larger bag to hold everything. I got it off of this site and it's amazing! I love that it holds everything. I also purchased a smaller bag to put my brushes in from the same site, and the brush bag fits right inside the larger bag so then everything is simply in one place.

Follow the 3-Lipstick rule

Not sure what the 3 lipstick rule is? Well here it is: When you travel, bring only 3 lipsticks. One lipstick should be a professional color (a nude, or a very basic light pink). The next should be a more fun color (perhaps a bright pink). This color should be one for day trips, excursion, lunch, or even dinner. The last color you should bring would be something a bit more "wild", like a deep red or a plum lipstick

Palettes are your best friend

Traveling means a few you things when it comes to makeup: 1. You don't have a lot of space. 2. You want a lot of variety. The answer? PALETTES. Whether it's eyeshadow palettes or blush palettes, palettes contain a ton of variety in (typically) relatively small packaging.

I definitely wouldn't bring the largest palette you own, but typically us girls have quite the variety when it comes to makeup palettes. Palettes allow you to have a ton of variety in the colors that you bring, while taking up minimal space at the same time.

Pack while doing your makeup

One of my best tried-and-true tips when it comes to packing your makeup for travel is literally packing your makeup as you apply it. If you're like me, you probably have your makeup all out in a nice display, so the essentials have to come out and go into the travel makeup bag.

Packing your makeup while applying it (either the day you're leaving or the day before) will ensure that you don't forget anything. I remember going on a trip while ago and I forgot my face powder... The horror!

Honestly though, if you want to avoid forgetting things, the best thing you can do is this!

Try bringing one blush

I know, I know. Those of us with a makeup obsession (ehem...a makeup PROBLEM), might have trouble grasping this one. Hear me out though - who's really going to be able to tell that you're wearing the same blush all week? More importantly though... who would even care?! Blush is the type of product that I used to pack a few of, but now I've come to the realization that it just isn't necessary.

I really like to pack this blush, because it's perfect for so many occasions!

Pack carefully

Makeup is fragile, and there's nothing worse than arriving at your destination and realizing that your favorite highlighter is cracked. If you have ANYTHING that you're bringing along with your with glass packaging, I urge you to delicately wrap it in bubble wrap or even tissue if you don't have any bubble wrap on hand.

I know a lot of foundation bottles come with class packaging, and what could be worse than foundation all over.... everything?

Pack your minis or samples

I always have all these makeup samples that I have no idea what to do with. It wasn't until I realized that I could actually use them for something that I started bringing them when traveling! Mini products or samples seriously save so much space when it comes to packing makeup.

Another thing that I find really helpful is packing your makeup staples. Traveling isn't necessarily the time to try out all the new products that you just picked up at Sephora. Instead, pack items that you already know that you love so you don't even have to worry about it.

  1. Yes! I follow the same lipstick rule--I always pack my favorite nude, a red lipstick and a bright one, although I find myself always gravitating towards the nude anyway haha. Palettes are great for travelling, I never bring single shadows! Great post :)

  2. I love the lipstick rule - I'm definitely going to have to try that next time I travel! I normally end up overpacking because I love my lippies. I also like to pack as I do my makeup in the morning; I've definitely found it prevents misplacing my makeup or forgetting any of the essentials! Great post!
