10 Tips For New Bloggers

honestly-hannah-10-tips-for-new-bloggers

Since I started blogging almost a year ago, I've learned so much about what it takes to actually be successful in the blogging world. I'm not an expert by any means, but I wanted to share some of my insight with anyone who might feel a little lost. Starting off blogging can be really tricky. It's extremely overwhelming, and you'll often find yourself comparing your blog to other more established blogs. I hope some of these tips will be of use to you, and I'd love to hear any of your tips/questions in the comments!

1. Stop comparing

One of the things that inspires many of us to start blogs is simply looking at other blogs and feeling inspired, and that's totally okay. There's nothing wrong with looking at other blogs and admiring them, but this shouldn't lead you to comparing your blog to these other blogs that are likely more established.

It can be really discouraging to feel like your blog doesn't measure up to others, but you have to keep in mind that everyone has to start somewhere and your blog is probably never going to be perfect.

2. Don't ignore social media

Social media is absolutely key for new bloggers. You want to connect with as many people as possible and establish a solid social media presence. Personally, I think it can be really hard to keep up with all your social media channels and really give them everything you got. I would recommend being represented on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and Bloglovin', but it's okay to choose two that you really want to focus on. I focus a lot of growing my Pinterest, as this is where the majority of my traffic comes from. I've also been using Instagram to establish more consistent branding for my blog. Again, I have a presence on all the accounts I mentioned, I just don't post multiple times a day on everything.

If you're a blogger, you want your readers to be able to follow you on social media to keep up with you. It's great for your blog!

3. Simple is better

Don't waste your time working with complicated and crazy themes. When it comes to starting up a blog, you want to work on your content. Download a free simple theme or a clean, inexpensive theme off of Etsy and it will look great. You can't go wrong with a simple and clean look for your blog.

4. Content is key

If you've been researching starting a blog, you've probably heard this 100 times. Content is key. Content is key. No matter how pretty your photos are or how solid your social media presence is, if your content isn't good, your blog isn't going to grow. Instead of spending time trying to tweak a complicated theme or come up with a good tweet, focus on coming up with really great, original content.

People want to know you. You have to establish yourself in order to make people trust you, and this comes along with creating awesome content.

5. Write what you know

A lot of bloggers, myself included, want to grow their blog and gain readers, but they don't know what to write about. You may have a variety of interests, so it's fine to categorize your blog as a lifestyle blog, like I have. Just make sure that you're writing about things you actually want to write about. If you ever find yourself forcing yourself to write a post on something, you should probably take a step back and think about writing something you actually care about.

6. Do your research

When I was starting a blog, I basically spent hours on Pinterest reading about starting a blog and repinning tons of different posts on the subject. I actually started a blog pretty impulsively almost a year ago, and I didn't do much research on blogging so my posts were not good. When I really started to get into it, I did more research so I could learn as much as I could about blogging before I really dove in.

7. Choose your domain name carefully

Your domain name is really important to your blog, and it should reflect you and how you want your blog to be portrayed. I've changed my domain name 3 times (yes, 3 times...), and I've finally settled on one I actually like. Think long and hard about your domain name, and choose something that can grow with you.

For example, I thought of using something with the word "college" in it, but I realized that I obviously wouldn't be in college forever and I needed to come up with something that could grow if I planned on blogging long term.

I chose Honestly Hannah, in the end, for a few reasons. 1) I like that it's sort of an alliteration (English nerd). 2) I'm a pretty blunt person and I like to tell it how it is, hence "honestly." 3) I want my readers to know that I'm going to be honest in my posts and give them genuine, good, information.

8. Set your intention

When you're first starting up a blog, it's important to consider where exactly you want your blog to go. Is this going to be just a little hobby? Are just your friends and family going to be reading your posts to keep up on your life? Do you want to make money? Do you want to turn your blog into a business?

These are all personal choices, so you simply have to think about what's going to be right for you!

9. Only post content your proud of

One thing I've learned is that you should never post content just to post content. If you decide you want to post Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and you find yourself scrambling to get Wednesday's post together and it doesn't come out good, don't just post it to post it. It's better to skip a day of your posting schedule than post something that you're really not proud of.

10. Have fun!

I feel like blogging can be made to be a bit of a daunting task, and yes, it can be daunting. Blogging can be difficult and overwhelming, but it's also SO fun. Even if you have the intention of turning your blog into a business, don't let it stress you out and take over your life. Blogging should be fun no matter what!

If anyone has been blogging for awhile, I'd love to hear some more tips that you have for new bloggers! As usual, if anyone has any questions, feel free to email me and I will get back to you as quickly as possible :)

    1. Thanks so much Nida! I try to post Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but as a college student, sometimes I get loaded up with schoolwork and need to skip a day! In general, I like to post 3 times a week :) I use blogger for my blog, and I purchased my custom domain through GoDaddy. Hope this helps :) feel free to email me anytime!
