How To Eat Healthy In College

Eating healthy in college can be a serious challenge. We all want to avoid that freshmen 15, but it can be really difficult when we're so busy with schoolwork and studying. Eating healthy is not always our first priority as college students, but we can easily change this! I've realized that eating healthy in college isn't as hard as it looks. After almost a year and a half of college, I've learned a lot about eating healthy. You don't have to completely cut out the foods you love, you just have to be a bit more mindful of the things you're eating! Here are my tips for eating healthy in college:

Be mindful of what you're eating

One of the best things you can do to eat healthy in college is simply being mindful of the things that you're putting into your body. At the beginning of college, I found myself just eating whatever was available, and not really thinking about what I was eating. When you have a dining hall filled with unhealthy food, it's easy to just grab a burger and fries everyday. There's plenty of healthy options in all college dining halls though, you just have to be mindful of what you're putting on your plate and avoid filling it with a bunch of fattening foods. 

Drink tons of water

I'm definitely guilty of forgetting to drink water throughout the day. Suddenly, it's 5 PM and I realize that I've only drank a little bit of water. I've worked on drinking more water throughout the day though, because it's so important for living a healthy lifestyle. If you're not a fan of plain water, you can always add a slice of lemon or drink tea instead! I always make sure to fill my water bottle before leaving for class in the morning, so I'll have that with me all day. I read somewhere that once you're feeling thirsty, you're already dehydrated. This is why you have to continually drink water throughout the day!

Eat when you're hungry, not when you're bored

Guilty... Again. Last year, I always found myself snacking when I was bored. There's no reason to start eating when you feel like you have nothing to do. If you're suddenly craving salty or sweet snacks, drink some water or tea to help settle these cravings. Eating is of course incredibly important for our health, but if you're eating your typical meals and just snacking when you have nothing better to do, this isn't going to help you stay healthy during your college years.

Eat healthy snacks

It's hard to not grab that bag of chips and suddenly find yourself binge eating the whole bag. Just stop. I promise you, you'll regret that bag of chips! Personally, I feel so much better after I eat healthy snacks. It may not be exactly what you're craving at the moment, but once you actually start eating healthy snacks regularly, you'll start craving them!

Keep some healthier meals in your room

If you eat at your college dining hall, it can be hard to make choices that support a healthy lifestyle when you're surrounded by unhealthy foods.
