Vacation Packing Tips & Tricks

I can't be the only one that absolutely hates packing. I feel like the worst part about going on vacation is packing for the trip and then unpacking when you get home from the trip. Being as organized as I am, however, I have found ways to make packing a bit more enjoyable and much more efficient. When I used to get ready to pack, I would just get overwhelmed and frustrated because I couldn't figure out what I actually needed to bring. Here are just a few quick tips and tricks for becoming an efficient packer!

1. Lay out all your outfits before putting items into your suitcase. One of the biggest mistakes I've made when packing is simply bringing too much stuff that I didn't actually end up needing. Planning out your outfits makes it easy to figure out how much you need to bring and helps you avoid bringing things that you don't actually need!

2. Fold/roll your clothes up nice and small and place them in your suitcase. Don't stack clothes on top of each other in your suitcase/duffel bag. This wastes a TON of space (more than you realize). When you organize your clothes in your suitcase like this, you save a lot of space and may actually be able to fit shoes and the rest of your belongings into one bag. If you're going on a longer trip, you can still do this and actually create two rows of clothes (one on top of the other).

3. Pack makeup as you're putting on your make the day of/day before traveling. Choosing the right makeup products to bring can be a little stressful, because you want to have all the products you'll need without bringing too much. Try bringing just one foundation, one powder, one bronzer, etc., and choose one eyeshadow palette that you can do a bunch of different looks with. I find that it's easiest to pack my makeup as I'm applying it so I don't end up forgetting anything.

4. Make use of ziplock bags. Things like shampoo, hairspray, face washes, etc., can damage your clothing. Put these items into ziplock bags in your suitcase so you don't have to worry about them exploding and getting on your clothing.

5. Utilize side compartments. Most suitcases/duffel bags are equipped with side compartments. These compartments used to go un-used when I traveled until I realized how helpful they really are. The duffel bag that I usually use is from Ricardo Beverly Hills (pretty sure it's just one of their duffel bags). These are amazing for short trips. I started using the side compartments for my shoes and let me tell you, it's worked out great. Shoes take up a lot of space, but these side compartments really ensure that they don't take up room in the main compartment of the bag.

  5. Ziploc bags for toiletries are suuuuch a lifesaver! I had a bottle of shimmery lotion explode in my suitcase once, but because I had it sealed in a ziploc, the damage was minimized. :)

  6. Great tips! I have to lay everything out first and plan all the outfits. I also pick out the bras I need as I'm laying out the outfits so I make sure I have the right one. I also split up my bras, undies and swimsuits in separate garment bags so they don't get lost in the pile of clothes. Very helpful post!
