My College Essentials - Honestly Hannah

My College Essentials

College shopping is undoubtedly an overwhelming experience. What if you forget something? What if you buy too much and can't fit it in your room? What if you can't fit everything in the car? These are all questions that flooded my mind while on my college shopping trips. Turns out, I ended up buying a lot of stuff I didn't need and forgot to buy a lot of the stuff I didn't realize I would need. I'd love to help you avoid these mistakes, so here are the things that I think are absolute college essentials.

1. Cleaning supplies
Okay, this may seem like an obvious one, but trust me here, there's so much that I forgot first semester because I thought I wouldn't use it. For example, my mom had asked me if I wanted to get a Swiffer Wet Jet before leaving for school, but I was convinced I didn't need it. A few weeks into freshmen year, I realized my mom was right yet again. I wanted that Swiffer Wet Jet. Luckily, I was able to get one and I'm so glad I did. In my opinion, you really can't have too much cleaning supplies. When it comes to keeping your dorm room clean and sanitary, you can never be too thorough.

2. A body pillow
My body pillow was a true blessing my first year at school. The bed felt SO small compared to my bed at home. If it hadn't been for my body pillow, I surely would've found myself pressed up against the cold wall most nights. You can purchase body pillows at Target for about $10, and it's honestly so worth it.

3. An extra phone charger
This might sound silly, but hear me out. Especially if you have an iPhone, the chargers break extremely easily. Your charger will go through a lot of wear and tear at school, so it's wise to keep an extra one on hand in case it stops charging.

4. Plastic boxes for storage
Storage in a college dorm room is quite limited. With two people living in a room, sometimes even three, space needs to be conserved. One of the best ways I've found for storing extra towels, sheets, suitcases, etc, was under my bed. I brought a few long plastic boxes and loaded them up with items and slid it under my bed. That way, I was able to store a lot in a small amount of space, and nothing was cluttering up my floor space.

5. A rug
I remember being SO happy that I had a rug. In my dorm room, the floor always seemed to be cold, especially in the morning. It was always nice to be able to step out of bed onto a nice rug instead of the cold floor. Just make sure you have an idea of how much floor space you'll have so you don't get a rug that's too small or too large. Usually colleges have the dorm room measurements on their website.

6. LOTS of comfy clothes
If you're a fashion lover like I am, you probably travel everywhere with an abundance of stylish and nice looking clothes. Now, I'm not saying to leave all your cute outfits at home, but I definitely spent a lot more time doing homework in leggings and a tee-shirt than I did in my dresses and skirts. Just make sure you have a good variety in your wardrobe.

7. A sleeping mask
I was extremely grateful for my sleeping mask at school. I love to sleep. I'm not one to stay up till all hours of the night unless I have a reason, but with roommates on a different schedule, going to sleep when I wanted to wasn't always easy. First semester I kind of suffered through it and found myself more on their schedule, but after being home for a month on Christmas break, I remembered how nice it was to go to sleep when I started to feel tired. Second semester I brought a sleeping mask and made a deal with my roommate that we would leave the hanging Christmas lights on, but turn off the overhead lights if someone was going to sleep and the other person wanted to stay up. This worked out great, because I would just turn off the overhead lights, throw on my sleeping mask, and go right to sleep.

8. K-Cups and Keurig
This is definitely optional, but if you're a coffee drinker, I promise these items will come in handy. College students usually don't have the money to buy coffee every morning, so K-Cups and a Keurig will save you TONS of money. Plus, if you're craving some coffee, you don't even have to leave your room!

9. Planner
My planner became my best friend during my first year of college. Something I learned very quickly was that absolutely no one is holding your hand and making sure you complete assignments on time. That's all up to YOU. The professor usually hands out a syllabus on the first day and it's your job to write all the important dates down in your planner, because chances are, there won't be a whole lot of reminders in class.

10. Desk organization supplies
I really didn't think this was necessary, but trust me, your desk will be a complete disaster before you know it if you don't take the time to organize it properly when you first get there. Buy a pencil holder, a magazine holder to store your folders and notebooks, and maybe another small basket to organize your post-its/flashcards.

11. A bubble umbrella
If you're headed to college and don't already have a bubble umbrella, you need one. I had a regular umbrella for awhile but I quickly realized that it just wasn't enough. Walking to class when it's down-pouring and the wind is blowing is simply not pleasant, and a small umbrella doesn't cut it. Bubble umbrellas come down even further and will keep rain from blowing in your face on the way to class.

12. A water bottle and water filter
I've read a lot of articles saying that a lot of college students (and people in general I suppose) don't drink enough water. With all the running around and crazy schedules that you deal with in college, you need to be drinking water throughout the day. I started off buying plastic water bottles and went through them really quickly. I started using reusable water bottles and just refilling them with water from my Brita water filter. It was much more convenient and I no longer I had spend money on plastic bottles at the store!
